Sync Brave

Brave browser comes with a sync feature which (at least to me) is very useful for syncing autofill, bookmarks, history etc across all the devices the modern nerd might have (desktop, laptop, maybe virtual machine, mobile phone etc).

Within the next two weeks, Brave Sync v2 will release in our Nightly version, replacing Sync v1. Brave Sync v1 will no longer be supported. Sync v2 fixes several underlying issues in the code, and adds additional data types to be synced across devices. Sync v2 also provides an improved User Interface.

One of the issues is the lack of “force sync” within the options, but I found the “force sync” button (called “Request Start”) within sync-internals.

If you want to force a sync (assuming you are already part of a chain etc) do the following:

  1. go to brave://sync-internals/
  2. press “Request Start”
  3. wait

To my surprise, this was not a technical issue but a design and user experience issue. The default Sync settings are to sync Bookmarks only. This makes sense for aprivacy-oriented browser. However, the setting are inexplicably buried in the Sync settings.
These settings should be an explicit step in the enable Sync flow, or they should figure muchmore prominently in the Sync settings.

Not much to see on the “Manage your synced devices” page, right?

Wrong! It took me a few days until I even noticed that there were additionalsettings “below the fold”. By default, only Bookmarks are synced.

Same story on Android. Not much to see here, right?Wrong! Check out the grayed out Data Preferences button at the bottom.

Again, by default only Bookmarks are synced.
